Solutions for Hair, Skin and Nails

Baldness or hair loss in both men and women is sometimes due to disease. Hair loss can occur with excessive weight gain or loss in a short period of time or when recovering from a high fever. Hair loss may occur when taking anti-cancer medications. Anemia due to lack of iron, can cause some hair loss. Hair loss can result from an over-or under-productive thyroid gland.

Other kinds of loss may occur for reasons such as:
* malnutrition,
* traumatic stress,
* hormone imbalances,
* autoimmune and thyroid disorders,
* post pregnancy changes, or
* chemotherapy.

Types of Hair Loss
Baldness is usually the result of genetic factors, aging, local skin conditions, diseases, and the ingestion of certain medications. Balding is always symmetrical in both male- and female-pattern baldness.

Male-Pattern Baldness
Male-pattern baldness, the most common type of balding in men, is controlled by a single dominant autosomal gene. This type of balding usually starts at the temples, then will gradually recede to form an "M" shape on the head. The hair on the top of the head will start to thin out. Over time, the male is left with a horse-shoe pattern of hair around his head. Some males will only have a receding hairline or a bald spot on the crown of their head. The hair that remains in the balding areas starts out as long, thick, and pigmented and changes into fine, unpigmented sprouts that grow at a slower rate. If a man begins losing his hair during his mid-teen years, there is a good chance he will become completely bald on top of his head.

Female-Pattern Baldness
Female-pattern baldness is caused by aging, genetic susceptibility, and levels of endocrine hormones, known as androgens. This type of balding usually begins around the age of 30 and becomes more noticeable at age 40; it can be more evident after menopause. Female-pattern baldness usually causes the hair to thin out all over the head, but rarely progresses to total or near baldness as it does in men. This type of hair loss is permanent. Females may also suffer hair loss because of temporary shedding, known as telogen effluvium; breaking of the hair due to styling treatments and the twisting or pulling of the hair (alopecia areata), an immune disorder temporarily causing patchy areas of total hair loss, oral medications and certain skin diseases.

Gray Hair
Hair color is produced by tiny cells called melanocytes that live within the hair follicles. In the course of a lifetime, the activity of the melanocytes in each follicle begins to wane, resulting in gray hairs. Each individual's melanocyte-clock is different, but in Caucasians this reduction of melanocyte activity usually occurs earlier than in other groups. If gray hairs appear in the person, this is called Canities (pronounced kah-nish'-eez). The appearance of gray hairs may be the result of a child's genetically determined maturational schedule.

DHT - Dihydrotestosterone

How does DHT cause thinning hair and hair loss?
When DHT becomes more active, it reacts with sebum and cholesterol found on and within the scalp. This DHT/sebum/cholesterol mix is shed into hair follicles, where it slowly narrows the tiny opening, causing the follicle itself to become shorter and shallower within the scalp.

The Skin: The largest and most visible organ of your body -- interacts with many of your internal organs. It's always important to avoid skin problems, but during pregnancy, it's essential. "Several medications used to treat skin, hair, and nail conditions have been shown to result in birth defects," according to Barbara Reed, MD, of the University of Colorado Health Center in Denver.

The Nails: Composed primarily of keratin, a hardened protein also found in skin and hair -- also reflect a woman's physical condition, and many diseases and serious conditions can be detected by changes in the nails
